So I was fiddling around this morning thinking about the novel and Halloween. Last night, I realized I should have geared up to promote the novel during October. Spooky month, you know, for a murderous novel. The three grannies each have a preferred weapon. Surely I could make a bookmark out of one of those. A knife bookmark, perhaps. But...

Where to Start?

So much to share, where to start? We had a great trip to Scotland, and I want to tell youse all about it. 🙂 I’m sure I will as the experiences seep into and out of my soul. We were traveling with my sister and brother-in-law and, later, my cousin and her husband. Y’all probably know me well enough to know this was my favorite part...

A Reading

Call me ridiculous. I just drove 45 minutes—45 minutes to and from—to participate in a reading. I was one of nine authors. The reading was at a local library. I had 13 minutes to read. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. In fact, when the facilitator was reading my bio, I thought, Ellen, why don’t you tell the truth? Skip the...

Y’all, I’m going to the Decatur Book Festival! I’m so excited. The festival takes place right outside of Atlanta. I know, the Falcons. Not good for a Saints fan. But take a look at the lineup of authors. It’s really fabulous. I’ll be on a panel with another writer who uses her family in her writing–more...

I expect I’ve mentioned here how hard it is for me to see photos of myself. Traditionally, it’s been even harder for me to watch film of myself. “Movies,” as they say, rather than still photographs. Recently, I appeared on the Earle Farrell 4Memphis Show. My husband was there during the interview. He said I did a good...

The Kindness of Strangers

This authoring business is a Blanche DuBois undertaking. Like the heroine in A Streetcar Named Desire, authors must depend on the kindness of strangers. First, an author asks people to come to their event. Then, when the guests arrive, you want them to buy a book. After that, you’re hoping they crack open the book and read it. Once...

I’m so pleased with this review, y’all, I have to share it–thank you to Chapter 16 and reviewer Bradley Sides for the extremely kind and enthusiastic review of WHEN WE WERE MURDEROUS TIME-TRAVELING WOMEN. Calling it a “rambunctious novel” packed with “action, humor, and heart,” he found it...

The Magic of the Book Launch

It wasn’t an accident, the magic of the book launch. I thought long and hard about what would feel like a success to me. After I did a guest reading at a coffeehouse in December in Ocean Springs, I knew I wanted it at a coffeehouse. Also, I wanted other authors joining me—at that reading, we had about eight writers reading. The...

Mile markers exist in the book publishing business. Marketing manuals contain these lists so authors won’t miss them. You’ll also see them in the wild. I’ve sold my book! My cover reveal! The books have arrived–watch me open the box! There’s a reason for these milestones. They make chronological and narrative...
