Contemplative Writing Prompts for Lent: 21

Can I suggest that, during this offering of contemplative writing prompts for Lent, if a prompt really doesn’t appeal to you, that might be the one to try? Our writing today at the Writing Room at 100 Men Hall reminded me of this. That which we dread—practicing sentences, switching points of view, examining our verbs—can offer the most enlightenment. This goes double for a contemplative writing practice. So if you really dislike today’s Contemplative Writing Prompts for Lent: 21, time to dive in.

Take your hand. Lay it palm down on a piece of paper. Trace the outline. Add anything that doesn’t show up in the outline (rings, fingernails, etc.) Turn your hand over. Trace the outline again. Again, add in what doesn’t show up.

Spend the remainder of your 20 minutes describing the similarities and differences between the two drawings. Let yourself write about the person who owns that hand, if you want. Whatever you do, please love the hand.
